But is that really what you want? Personally, I just love the feeling I get when I stand back and look at my projects thinking, Wow… I built that!

Most of the prefab kits are made in bulk. They will not always be to the liking of every buyer. If you are anything like me and want to be able to build your own custom barn or shed, then do it! You won’t look back.

Another important thing to remember is that it’s cheaper to build it yourself than to either buy it pre-built or getting someone else to do it for you. With good preparation and planning building your own shed or barn shouldn’t take you much longer than a few weeks. With the help of family (like my son) or friends it can only take a few days.

Your new barn or shed will outlast any prefab kits and provide you and your loved ones with years of joy.

The all important thing to start with is quality barn shed plans. Please do not fall into the trap I did and think that any old plan will do. This will cost you dearly.

These plans will be there every step of the way, ensuring a smooth and hassle free build. Safety to me is the most important and should be to you too. Having good Barn Shed Plans will not only guarantee a strong build, but will also ensure the safety of the structure.  The barn shed plans should be easy to read and with all the relevant measurements and sizes of timbers you will require.

Not fully understanding your plans will soon will land you into trouble with your build, sooner or later. To wrap up, make sure you have good quality barn shed plans, materials, tools and timber before you start your build.

Make sure you understand the plans. This is the most important part. Once you have all of this, you will have a smooth build and a structure that will last you a very, very long time.

One tip I feel I must share with you is to make a copy of the barn shed plans if you do not have one. I have lost loads of plans during my career and I’m sure you would not want your only copy to get destroyed.

My experience has taught me to use the following tips when starting a new project:

What I normally do is start with the type or species of wood I would like to use before I jump into my project. For instance, you definitely do not want to be using soft pine to build furniture that is going to be getting a lot of abuse. There are much better types for such projects, like maple or oak.

I just cannot mention this enough, but ensure that you have the correct tools at hand. It really can be frustrating attempting any furniture projects if you do not have the correct hardware. Good quality wood furniture plans will tell you exactly what is needed before you start.

Obviously some hardware will be harder to find, but there is always alternative methods of getting these. I remember back in the day how I struggled.

One of my downfalls is that I am quite a perfectionist. I usually take much longer on a project to ensure that it really is just right. With that being said, I urge you to focus on the finishing of your project. Decide whether you want to stain or paint your project.

If your choice is to stain, make sure that you use a wood conditioner before applying the stain for instance. The stain will minimize splotching and insure an even coverage. Should you choose to paint, you have to ensure that you use a good quality primer (oil-based) to keep the grain from lifting or raising.

These are just a few very basic, yet crucial things, I’ve learnt to focus on when using Wood Furniture Plans. Don’t get discouraged if you cannot find what you are looking for or if the project seems too big to handle.

Keep at it, focus and you’ll be OK!

Sure, you will find some here and find some there, but to be quite frank… the majority of free storage shed plans are pretty bad. Fortunately there are exceptions, but again, you get what you pay for.

Honestly, throughout my long and “lustrous” woodworking adventure I have tried anything and everything. I have seen fads and phases come and go.

One particular thing just always boggled my mind though. People were always trying to find free storage shed plans or any other plans for that matter.

Am I crazy for thinking or saying this?

Most definitely not. In fact, really decent plans are actually one of the cheapest investments you can ever make when doing woodworking projects. I always thought of it as a single, one-time investment that would bring me joy for years to come.

The days of me sitting in front of my Computer (I don’t like computers) trying to find free plans are over. It used to literally take me hours to find good plans only to find that it isn’t really what I was hoping it would be or that it would actually be worth building. Luckily for me, those days are over. J

I have always personally believed that a really good set of well drawn plans will actually save me more on lumber costs in the long run. Trust me; I have wasted huge amounts of lumber in my life.

Free Storage Shed Plans might be ok for those lucky ones who have enough time on their hands to find and test good enough plans.

I just count myself lucky to have been able to use and share with you what I have learnt and to properly apply it when doing what I love… and that is Woodworking.

It reminds me of when I really started fiddling with carpentry, many years ago. My first “serious” project was to build my mother the best coffee table she has ever seen. All I had was a picture that I tore out of an old magazine. No plans, nothing.

Of course, being my ambitious self, I thought “How hard can this be?”. I went down to the local hardware store and got myself some nails, wood, a hammer and screws and started with my work of art. 5 hours in, I hit my very first road block.

Now, this table was quite an intricate little monster with cross support legs (don’t ask J). I realized I needed a miter box. At the time, it took me a lot of trial and error but I wasn’t going to let a little angle get me down. That specific hot summer’s day, I realized that angles are no fun!

Soon it became evident that I was spending way too much time and money on my little project and that it would have been easier, quicker and cheaper to just buy one. Oh, and did I mention it took me almost 3 weekends to finish it! Like the barn shed plans I use today, if only I had plans for my coffee table back then, it would have made things so much easier.

Needless to say, I didn’t even know I had to treat the wood. About 3 month’s worth of family use soon proved this costly mistake. Besides, it was too hard to get in all the little nooks and crannies.

I really hope that my silly little story inspires you to finish your project, whatever the size. Success truly does begin and end with proper planning. Now, many years later I own a very successful barn shed building business, all thanks to proper planning and the use of great barn shed plans. I do feel that knowing your product and industry will greatly save you time and money.
